My Recipes : Dal Gosht

This is a rare dish , it combines the two popular ingredients of north indian/frontier cuisine i.e mutton and yellow dal ( arhar or toor dal ) . This is my take on this dish.

Mutton pieces - small 1/2 inch cubes - 1 cup
toor dal - 1 cup ( soaked for 1 hour )
onion - 1 cup
ginger & garlic paste - 1 table spoon
Chopped tomato - 1 medium
coriander, cumin powder - 1 tea spoon
Garam masala - 1 tea spoon
green chillie - 2-3 split
ginger slits fine - 1 tea spoon
turmeric - per taste
Red Chile powder - 1 tea spoon
oil for cooking
salt per taste

for tadka

ghee - 1 table spoon
garlic - chopped 1/2 tsp

Put oil in a deep vessel, let it warm, add coriander-cumin powder, turmeric powder and red Chile powder - stir for 1 minute, add onion and ginger garlic paste and fry for 2-3 minutes, add mutton cubes and let it cook for 5-6 minutes, add chopped tomatoes and let it cook for another 5 minutes, add the soaked dal , salt and garam masala powder and let it cook for 5 minutes. Add 5-6 cups of water , green Chile and chopped ginger slits and cover and cook till dal is done , stir in between so that dal mixes well . When finished it should have the texture and consistency of regular dal.

For tadka , warm ghee in a small pan and add garlic , let it brown . then add this to the dal and cover the lid .

Cong vs BJP - Its Business Stupid !

Well well..

Don't we think Congress separated there Strategy , Execution and Communication and handled it better the BJP ? and hence leading to there victory, reminds of something similar in corporate world ?)))))

Strategy ( Long and Short Term Strategy in States ) - Sonia , Rahul, Digvijay singh
Execution ( Running the government ) - Manmohan Singh and his cabinet, very focused .
Communication - Great control on all electronic and print media.

BJP just mixed all of the above in one and didn't create a clear cut team , it was all confused and lost.

Bottom line, running a company or a party or country, the metrics and parameters remain the same.

Goverment Formation

Realy like the way Manmohan Singh is going about forming his cabinet, clearly said no the Raju's and Balu's , more famous for corruption and anything during the last cabinet.

Congress ( national party ) is dicting the terms , good for our country. National Politics is driving towards Bipolarity centred around two national parties. great for india.

though one irony i can't miss , in 1989 Rajiv Gandhi won 189 seats he was declared a looser, in 2009 congress wins 201 and are dictating the terms of national politics.

Which takes me to next point and that is if congress does't act wisely (politicaly ) , the politics , will be back to 1989 , all vs congress.

Game Over for NDA, Well Played UPA (Rahul)

UPA is the clear winner. Good that a national party is coming to power and that also without the help of Left, good for india's growth.

Rahul's strategy of going alone in UP paid off, looks like they will be the largest party there.

Steam Cooking - Some recepies

Of late i have been trying my hand on Steam Cooked dishes . They turned out very well. Steam cooking has its own taste and is very healthy with very little infront-of-stove time required. Load it in the steamer and forget it!!!. In addition if one is cooking fish or sea food , the cooking is very much odorless. Below are some dishes .

Steamed Spicy Shrimp

1/2 inch Cubes of Shrimp ( 12-15)
Coriander, Cumin powder- 1 tablespoon
Red Chile powder - 1 tsp
Salt - per taste
Lemon juice - 1 table spoon
Ginger Garlic paste- 1 tablespoon
slit green Chile - 1
Olive oil - 1 table spoon

Marinate the Shrimp in the masala above and keep it aside for 30 mins . wrap the marinated shrimp pieces tightly in aluminum foil .

In rice steamer or bamboo steamer put the wrapped foil and cook let it steam cook for 30 mins. Enjoy the shrimp along with juices in aluminum foil.

Mustard Salmon ( You can use any fatty fish, i make Hilsa, Mackeral) the same way

1 inch salmon cubes 10
yellow mustard and green Chile paste 2 Table spoon
Mustard oil : 2 table spoon
salt per taste
green Chile split - 2

Marinate the Salmon Cubes in the masala above and keep it aside for 30 mins . wrap the marinated shrimp pieces tightly in aluminum foil .

In rice or bamboo steamer put the wrapped foil and cook let it steam cook for 30 mins. Enjoy the Fish with rice .

Tandoori Lamb@Salang Pass , Fremont

Checkout this dish if you get chance, name is a bit misnomer , its a slow tandoor cooked lamb gravy dish, the closest i have eaten is the Sikandari Raan(Dry Dish ) at Peshawar Restaurant, ITC Hotel Chain. Both dish belong to Indo-Afghan style of cooking.

India@Costco

Today we went to Costco @Sentar Road in Sanjose to our surprise we found new Indian ready to eat items. Looks like India is getting mainstream , at least in bay area. Some of the items we found are

1. Madras Lentil Curry ( Which i think is Sambhar )
2. Nanak Rasmalai
3. Coconut Curry Mix

Will be interesting to check how these products do when we visit next time, these big retailers do lot of research before putting something on there shelf , they won't put anything with low inventory turns in first place. Looks like day is not far off when we get fresh samosa at Costco :)))

National Politics : Circa 2014

While no clear formation looks like getting a clear majority in 2009 and who forms the goverment will be decided by which of the two formation (NDA, UPA ) can pay better premium for the thirdfront and fourth front parties , there is clear trend in consolidation towards national parties while leading upto 2014 elections. And its for good for nation.

Some of the key points leading to this are .

- Rahul Gandhi going it alone in UP,Bihar , Jahrkhand even at the possible expense of not forming goverment after 2009 elections

- Polarisation of BJP around Narendra Modi as future leader , unless BJP wins 25 + seats in UP. Then Rajnath Singh will be a player

- Possible weakning of regional parties in this elections

Its possible Rahul vs Modi 2014.

Today the National Politics is sum of regional politics, it looks like 31 states going for assembly elections seperately only difference is they are electing for lok sabha . ::))

Its important for India that national parties drive the national agenda and goverment formation and not regional parties and looks like 2014 will be something on that line. Otherwise Nation gets driven in 31 different direction leading to local and regional feeling instead of one nation.

Menu is full of Veg and non veg dishes.

Its located in the Mcrathy Ranch (Ranch 99) complex and is across the Thai place.

Only thing missing is they dont serve beer , otherwise i can imagine people gossiping everything under the sun for hours over beer and fish fry :))

Vintage Maestro

Maestro was at his vintage best, reminded us of his heydays but with a calmness of a saint , coverdrive were just perfect, backfoot punch was executed with time to spare , and flick of the pads were flying of the bat.

He is now a old vintage wine , now his batting hits you slowly but gives more kick . On to his 100's of 100's in couple of years.

Yaantrik RaaS Solution

This is the culmination of the thoughts i started in my previous articles ( The next Dinosaurs ) in which i talked about the process inefficiency which has seeped into the IT companies and IT department's of big companies which has led to fat organizations and inefficient process , leading to cost escalation in multiples and reducing the ability of this companies to change fast to new business models . I also talked about how the downturn forces new process and solutions which leads to tech tonic shift in the existing models. The oil crisis of 70's forced lean manufacturing in automobile industry and hence the growth of Japanese automobile industry at the expense of US.

The current downturn is begging for a similar efficient process and solution for IT industry. The current model has lived its life.

The Yaantrik RaaS Solution is a solution designed in that respect . Yaantrik is my own company name and RaaS stands for a new term i am introducing , it Stands for Resource-as-a-Service.

The patent and trademark for the above solution is in progress.

The main principle for the solution are

1. reduce idle time of resources , move from SOW to pay for duration of use . On an average my study has shown 80-90 % idle times for resources in non management areas . ( QA, Development , design )
2. Move from Resource to skillset . the client should pay for skillset for the duration of time and not for a resource for a duration. IT service provider is tied to get a workdone by skillset and not by resource, they can get it done by any resource and not particular resource. Its win win for client and IT service providers .
3. A Intra and Inter cloud platform in which the resources are virtual, a workcan be done by anyone on the cloud . So a QA deliverable can be picked by any resource irrespective of group alignment. It will be remove siloed resource allocation.

It will be built as a cloud collaboration platform in which vendor's will collaborate and compete with each other to provide skillset and deliverable and not fill in resources. I am reducing the unit of measure for payment from quarter to duration of deliverable.

My calculation is on average project cost will go down by 70-80% on non management areas .

enough for now , back to looking for funding from some generous VC's in this downturn. :) the few i spoke are saying its tough in this market , no harm keep trying , will keep you posted.:)

I got the invitation to come over for practice but unfortunately didn't have the whites or shoes, next time for sure i am carrying my cricket kit to india :)

Slumdog Millionaire - Irony

Well , after weeks of dilly dallying , i finally made myself see this movie , ( i had the DVD for last 2 weeks ) , and as my gut feeling was , i did't find anything exceptional with this movie. I am still trying to figure out what was so great about Rehman's music, he has given 100 times better songs then this in many hindi movies . Or for that matter what was so exceptional about this movie's screenplay and direction . Lagan, Omkara, TZP are much better movies overall, just to name a few

This is a very average movie per me.

Hmm, the difference is its made my a white guy and made in English . I doubt if Mira nair would have made this movie , this would have gone any further then a few reviews here and there , leave aside Golden Globe or Oscars.

Why chase Oscars when the juries don't even understand our languages or sensibilities.

My India Trip Diary

Went to India after 3 years, (Jyoti had a short trip in between ) , wasn't expecting a lot of change and was not disappointed , though sadly :((( Interesting notes from the trip

- International roaming worked while in transit. Was not sure .

- Kolkata airport is still the same as was 10 years back, international terminal resembles a bus stand , domestic terminal is much much better. It took 2 hours to clear immigration .

- Security at the airport was nominal considering there was a level 1 security warning couple of days before . "Chalta hai " to the fore.

- Enjoyed all good food, had a interesting discussion with dad on which portion of goat is good, raan or back leg. I had my preference for raan, dad came along with me .Btw , people in Bengal like there meat to be fatty and hence preference for leg and grown up goat. I too like fatty meat once in a while

- Went shopping to one of the new malls, malls are mushrooming all over india , are they any barometer of india's progress? btw in some of the malls they are charging entry fees as people go there on weekend outings for fun .

- Checked out ITC sonar bangla , Jyoti liked the Paneer seek kabab, i ticked off one of my to do item i.e sikandaree Raan. Food in ITC chain is always good compared to other 5 stars, because of there Dum pukht and Peshawari restaurant chains.

- No direct flight connectivity between Kolkata and Benaras so back to old faithful , indian rail. No change there either, with coach attendant asking for tips without doing anything. Good thing, train reached destination on schedule.

- got a look at one of Vajpayee's imortal contribution , the natioanl hiways . they are of very good standard. but still bicycles and tractors sharing the freeway with fast moving vehicles. Why?

- Benaras remained unchanged , and it has not changed for 6 thousand years of recorded history. But someone should do something about the city. narrow lanes, no traffic sense( like any other city ) and lot of pollution.

- Visited IT BHU my Alma matter. Seems like they are formally changing the name to IIT BHU . lot of construction work going to accommodate the new reservation policies in the IIT's and IIM's, Took Jyoti and Mona( Jyoti's younger sister) down the memory lane in the Kings Pavilion cricket ground . One of the best cricket ground i have played on.

- Mona selected Kebab Factory at Raddision for Jyoti's birthday dinner. Ticked of one more to do item. Gilawati kebab. Its a experience. People visiting Lucknow region check it out. Its not found anywhere else. Its also called Tunde ke Kabab

- Visited Ramnager fort , the palace of Kashi Naresh ( King of Varansi Princely state). its amazing to know no one has ever seen a kashi naresh eating including his wife. For more then 15 generations the king eats in isolation the pure satvik vegi food . BHU was built on the land donated by Kashi Naresh .

- Back in Kolkata , had interesting discussion on Pranayam with Dad, seems like he was doing it wrong for last couple of years. He accepted, though i am not a master, but was able to explain logicaly i guess.

- Saw Satyam news , a sense of de ja vu , i thought i had seen this happening sometime back.

- Sachin batted aggresively against shurastra, was fun to watch .also saw some of his old brutal innings. Warne and akram taken to cleaners, one of the shots he has stopped using now, the short wrist jab over mid on and mid wicket. The more i see his old self in the videos , more i think he should retire now. He was owner of the cricket field then . Now the cricket field owns him :) . I am planning to collect the videos of all his innings before 2003.

- My neice simmi one of the smartest kid i have seen, expert in everything, she is the teacher for my dad on using computers. She considers Jyoti's as her best Friend , piyoo are you taking notice ?:))))))))))))))))

- younger brother, Dipu got the bengali delicacy mustard Pabda made at one of his Friends place. One of another tick item on to do list. Yummy.

- Met Arjun and Shashi over lamb shanks and beer . guess where, ITC Sonar bangla. The marrow in shank was amazing.

- Could't travel to delhi , to meet Nitin , Kartik , 3 weeks was too short a time. Promise , next time. My freinds understand.:))

- enojyed getting into US on GC for first time, took 5 mins end to end.

- Jyoti enjoying her extended stay in india and i am back in US for my bread and butter.

Lot to say , but time to quit now .All said and done, India is india .

The Next Diansaurs - Revisited.

Couldn't resist revisiting my earlier thoughts on future of IT industry in the series the IT industry The Next Dinosaurs , the basic questions around inefficiencies in IT companies and there business models leading to using under the table methods to gain business and profitability , mentioned in the articles is coming to fore. Inefficient companies use unlawfull tactics to remain profitable.

Also the call on Infosys breaking away and not all of big IT companies will survive is coming good.
http://raishashi.blogspot.com/2007/08/looking-into-future-next-dinosaurs.html

So what next

I personally feel , satyam should not be bailed out, it should be made an example as it will make other companies to come clean . I feel most of the Indian IT companies are using unfair means to cover there inefficiencies.
